Essay Question (pg66)
4) Discuss the differences among the multimedia, interactive multimedia, hypertext, and hypermedia.
Multimedia - Multimedia is defined as the integration of sound, animation, and digitized video with more traditional types of data such as text. It is an application-oriented technology that is used in a variety of ways, for example, to enhance presentations, and is based on the increasing capability of computers to store, transmit, and present many types of information. For instance, when someone turns on a computer, puts a CD (compact disc) in its CD drive, and listens to her favorite music while she works on a paper, she is experiencing multimedia. The major difference between multimedia and hypermedia is that the user is more actively involved in the hypermedia experience, whereas the multimedia experience is more passive.
Interactive multimedia - Interactive multimedia is an integration of digital media including combinations of electronic text, graphics, moving images, and sound, into a structured digital computerized environment that allows people to interact with the data for appropriate purposes. It allows learners to provide input to an online course and receive feedback as a result of the input. The input might consist of a mouse click or drag, gestures, voice commands, touching an input screen, text entry and live interactions with connected participants. Besides that, interactive multimedia is allows the combination of the multimedia to jump around, provide the user with choices like menu list, and buttons, hyperlink and so on.
Hypertext - Hypertext is a text which contains links to other texts. It can be stored, read, searched, or edited with an important exception; hypertext is text with pointers to other text. Hypertext is usually non-linear (as indicated below). The browsers let you deal with the pointers in a transparent way -- select the pointer, and you are presented with the text that is pointed to. Hypertext can be considered as an innovation to the paradigms of computing user interfaces that attempts to overcome the limitations of written text also. Hypertext, instead of remaining static like traditional text, will dynamically "branch or perform on request" (Nelson 1970). Thus hypertext makes possible the organization of material in ways that partially overcome the linearity inherent in written text.
Hypermedia - Hypermedia is a superset of hypertext. Hypermedia documents contain links not only to other pieces of text, but also to other forms of media - sounds, images, and movies. Images themselves can be selected to link to sounds or documents. This means that browsers might not display a text file, but might display images or sound or animations. Hypermedia simply combines hypertext and multimedia. Hypermedia should not be confused with hypergraphics or super-writing which is not a related subject. For example, surfing the World Wide Web, following links from one site to another, looking for all types of information, is called experiencing hypermedia.
The term "hypertext" is often used where the term hypermedia might seem appropriate; the two have always been synonymous but "hypertext" is grammatically simpler.
There is another example explanation for hypermedia and hypertext. Enjoy!

5) Your boss wants you to create a hypermedia system for Web visitors to find technical support information about your company. What are some of the implications in creating this system? Should you hand build the links or use an automatic indexing system? why?
Hypermedia includes use of sound, video, image and text. This helps the user to know about the product of the company. However, the hypermedia restricts the speed of the web and it also enhances the time taken for opening of the site. A Hypermedia System is an application which uses associative relationships among information contained within multiple media data for the purpose of facilitating access to, and manipulation of, the information encapsulated by the data.
Yes, I should hand build the links or use an automatic indexing system. This is because hand build indexing system and automatic indexing can hold the information(content) together. It's the layer of order which makes database product, robust, and responsive. Thus, it is the best ever to serve the needs of organization. Furthermore, advanced indexing schemes will be further available for dynamic and interactive hypermedia generation.
The video below is one of the example of Indexing System. It's an application called "documentINDEXER+". DocumentINDEXER+ is a powerful document indexing solution for most any small business. Its powerful feature set will Capture, Process and Publish automatically your office documents. NO LIMITS to the number of files captured and processed and NO LIMITS to the number of searchable PDF files published (or TIF).
