1) Discuss the difference between bitmap and vector graphics. Describe five different graphic elements you might use in a project, for example, the background, buttons, icons, or text. Would you use a vector tool or a bitmap tool for each element? Why? (pg101)
(a)
First of all, Bitmap images or Raster images, which are made up of colour pixels in a grid. Pixels are picture elements; tiny dots of individual color that make up what you see on your screen. All these tiny dots of color come together to form the images you see.
a 4 x 3 pixel image = 12 pixels total
Most computer monitors display approximately 70 to 100 pixels per inch--the actual number depends on your monitor and screen settings. The problem with bitmap graphics is that they don't enlarge well as Photoshop needs to guess what color the extra pixels should be because this can result a loss of definition and a dramatic lowering in quality, depending on how much you enlarge the image. Real images are of course a lot more complex and consist of many more pixels. Common file formats for bitmap image data include GIF, JPEG and PNG for Internet usage and TIFF for print usage, BMG, PICT(Macintosh), PCX and PSD(Photoshop).
From the Figure1.1 at below, you can see that zooming in on a bitmap image reveals the pixels that make up the image when viewed at 100%. Once the picture is enlarged, the physically enlarging an image will degrade quality.
Figure1.1
Vector images are made up of many individual and scalable objects. These objects are defined by mathematical equations rather than pixels, so they always render at the highest quality. Objects may consist of lines, curves, and shapes with editable attributes such as color, fill, and outline.
Figure1.2
For Instance, company logos are often vector graphics. They are usually made up of limited colors, although they may feature sophisticated gradients and shading to produce more sophisticated looking graphics. Common vector formats include AI (Adobe Illustrator), CDR (CorelDraw), CMX (Corel Exchange), CGM Computer Graphics Metafile, DXF AutoCAD and WMF Windows Metafile. Vector graphics are usually much smaller in file size than bitmap graphics, unless bitmap images are embedded inside the image, in this case the file size will usually be larger. If bitmap graphics are embedded in vector files (for example, an EPS), the bitmap element of the graphic will suffer in quality if resized, whereas the vector element will always output at excellent quality regardless of this.
As shown in the figure1.3 at below, the words "A" had been enlarged without loss in any quality.
Figure1.3
The table below shows the summary of differences between Bitmap and Vector graphic.
The video below can let you more understand about the differences between the Bitmap/Raster and Vector graphic.
(b)
Background - Bitmap graphics are suitable to be use in this area as it is more colourful and presentable. In the coporate world, bitmap graphics are used as presentation background as it is more professional.
Buttons - For buttons vector graphics are better to be used as it is low in resolution and loads faster than bitmap graphics.
Icons - Vector graphics are better to be used in icons as it is low in resolution . And vector graphic is easier to load plus it's size can be adjusted without losing it's image quality or resolution.
Texts - Vector graphics are used in text because text are simple graphics. And it only needs low resolution to show it's purpose
(c)
In my opinion, I will use Vector Graphic for each elements because actually everything can represented by some amount of geometrical shapes even though for some shapes this will be awful lot of geometric shapes. But if one consider the easy case of a straight line, it is clear that one would need a very high resolution picture of that line if shouldn’t look choppy when printed on 10m x 10m paper. The information is really need to draw the line is really only the starting and ending point of the line which a very small piece of information when written as a vector. So vector graphics is great for anything that seems reasonable to be build from points, lines, curves, and polygons. Drawings, Logos and such really benefits from being treated as vector graphics. In digital pictures the are often few straight lines and further more the noise in the picture is what gives the picture life, so if not a special effect is desired, there is no need to vectorized photographs.

4) You are a designer given the task of creating a web site for a new division of your company. Start by defining the characteristics of the customers of the company and the kind of image the company wishes to present to its customers. Then specify a colour palette to be used for the design of the site. Defend your colour choices by discussing the associations people have with the colours and how they relate to your customers and the company's image. (pg102)
Color is a major consideration in any Web design. Whether for an individual, small company, or major corporation, color scheme is one of the most significant factors in the overall look and appearance of a website. If I am from the sport company, first thing i will do is differentiate the characteristics of customers of the company. The characteristic are as follow:
(i) Demographic characteristic - First of all, I will create a market research survey or investigate for differences elements such as gender, age, ethnic background, income, occupation, education, household size, religion, generation, nationality and social class. As a human being, everyone wants a healthy body, so they will go for exercise. As a sport company, we are targeting kids, adult and seniority, no specific genders. We will let all people knows that everyone have to and should go for exercise in order to get a healthy body. Besides that, sports activity can let them to fulfill their leisure time with friends and family. Thus, I think Red colour is the most suitable for Demographic characteristic to use as one of the colour to create the web site. This is because Red colour represent sports is an activity which are enthusiasm, energy, love, passion, joyfulness, courage to everyone.
(ii) Behavioral Characteristics - Behavioral characteristics of consumer markets include product usage rates, brand loyalty, user status or how long they have been a customer, and benefits that consumers seek. Every sports company would like to know that how often their consumers visit their sport outlet, stores or use/purchase their products based on the customers' loyalty. For this characteristic, I think Blue is the most suitable to use as one of the colour to create the web site. This is because Blue portrays creativity, wisdom, gentleness, calmness, trust, loyalty, intelligence, devotion, confidence, comfort, ideas, harmony, friendship, and patience. On top of that, Blue colour can be represent sports brand as loyalty, confidence and trustworthiness to the customers so that they can trust our company sports products and repurchase them again and again. Most businesses use blue to build customer loyalty and brand reliability.
(iii) Geographic Characteristics - Last but not least, Geographic is the last characteristic of the customers of the company. Geographic characteristic is often based on market size, region, population density. For instance, a small retailer may find opportunities in a small market in which larger competitors have no interest. Same as our sport company, we will do some investigation for the market size, see how many customers are interesting/loyalty to our brand, how large the region is, and how many population in a country. These all details are very helpful to our company in order to produce a new product or reproduce an existing product to our customers. Thus, I think White colour is the most suitable to use as one of the colour to create the website. This is because White colour represent innocence, purity, positivity, spirituality, virginity, cleanliness, equality, complete and whole, simplicity, and self-sufficient. White is totally reflective, awakening openness, growth and creativity. "We can't hide behind it as it amplifies everything in its way". Same as our company's objective, we provided the best quality and neutrality products to our valued customers. On behalf, in colour psychology, white is the color of new beginnings, wiping the slate clean, and starting afresh. This represents that our sport company is a pure company, very fresh to everyone, can let people feel that the products will make them more self-sufficient when they are using the products.
As a conlusion, I will use Red colour, Blue colour and White colour as the colour palette to design my company web site.
